An LED headlight can look impressive in a product photograph without answering the most important question: will it put usable light on the road without dazzling other people? Brightness is only one part of a successful replacement.
Treat the purchase as three separate checks: mechanical fit, electrical compatibility and suitability for the roads where the motorcycle will be used. Passing one does not settle the others.
Ask what the quoted brightness figure describes. Is it a figure for the LED chips, the complete unit or a measured beam? Without a stated method, two large numbers may tell you very little about the difference between the lamps.
Look for a manufacturer's beam description and application information. Consider the roads you actually use: an unlit lane, wet main road and street-lit commute place different demands on how you judge the result. Do not confuse an extremely white appearance with proof of better visibility.
The Great Britain motorcycle MOT manual assesses the beam image and aim, as well as operation and condition. A lamp is not suitable simply because it switches on. [1]
Nominal diameter is only the beginning. Confirm the mounting arrangement, retaining ring, rear clearance and room for the connector. Ask whether a model-specific adapter or different mounting hardware is required. For example, J.W. Speaker directs buyers to its motorcycle fitment guide to establish whether a mounting ring kit is needed. [2]
Before ordering, photograph the existing shell and connection. Keep the original lamp's identifying details. Where a complete assembly is specified, do not assume its lens or internal parts can be transferred into another housing.
Think about servicing too. A connector trapped against the shell or wiring crushed by a retaining component is not a satisfactory installation, however tidy the front of the bike looks.
Check the actual connector, high-beam and dipped-beam functions, and any separate position light. Do not take a connector that physically mates as confirmation that the pin assignments and functions are correct.
Use the manufacturer's documented adapters where required. Avoid creating a collection of undocumented splices simply to make a lamp sold for another application illuminate. Keep the wiring diagram and instructions with the motorcycle's records.
Check both beam settings after installation. The motorcycle MOT requirements include immediate switching between main and dipped beam when the dip switch is operated. [1]
Market information matters too. Custom Dynamics explicitly limits its suggested fitments to US models. Treat that limitation seriously when checking an imported or UK-market motorcycle. [3]
Ask for confirmation of the lamp's relevant approval, intended traffic direction and suitability for the particular motorcycle. Rather than relying on a “DOT” description alone, ask the supplier to confirm suitability for your intended use.
Have the finished installation's beam aim checked properly. The Great Britain MOT manual contains specific requirements for beam pattern and alignment, including the direction and position of the beam. [1]
However, an MOT inspection is not a substitute for establishing the product's wider road-use compliance. DVSA's testing guide specifically explains that an MOT record is not evidence that a vehicle complies with every aspect of construction and use law. [4]
Do not assume fitting an LED bulb into an existing lamp produces the same result as fitting a complete lamp designed around that light source. Obtain explicit compatibility and road-use confirmation for the proposed combination.
A good headlight purchase is one you can explain without mentioning a huge lumen figure. It fits the motorcycle, connects correctly, produces the required beam and is suitable for its intended use.
Start with those questions, then choose the appearance that suits the bike.
