Harley-Davidson Footpegs and Floorboards: Choosing the Right Fit

Footpegs and floorboards might seem like straightforward accessories, but they play an important part in how a Harley-Davidson feels and handles. They affect your riding position, the support available for your feet and how easily you can operate the gear lever and rear brake.

Whether you are replacing worn original equipment, customising your bike or looking for greater comfort on longer journeys, choosing the right footpegs or floorboards involves more than simply picking a design you like.

Footpegs or Floorboards: What's the Difference?

Footpegs provide a relatively compact platform for your feet. They are common on Sportster, Dyna and many Softail models, particularly those with mid-mounted or forward foot controls.

Their compact design gives your feet freedom to move, which can be useful when changing riding position or operating the controls. Footpegs are available in numerous styles, from traditional rubber-covered designs to machined aluminium pegs with aggressive grip surfaces.

Floorboards provide a larger, flatter surface on which to rest your feet. They are particularly associated with Harley-Davidson Touring models and certain Softails.

The extra surface area allows riders to move their feet around more easily without lifting them completely off the supports. This can be especially welcome on longer journeys.

Neither arrangement is automatically better. Much depends on the motorcycle, your riding style and your personal preferences.

Understanding Harley-Davidson Footpeg Mounts

One of the most important considerations when buying replacement footpegs is the mounting arrangement.

Many older Harley-Davidson models use what is commonly described as a traditional male-mount footpeg. However, not every Harley uses this arrangement.

Different mounting systems can be found across the model range, including variations on later Sportsters, 2018-onwards Softails and other more recent models.

Some aftermarket footpegs use separate adapters, allowing a common peg design to be fitted to several different mounting systems.

Before ordering, check:

  • Your motorcycle's exact model and year.
  • Whether the footpeg is intended for the rider or passenger position.
  • The type of mounting arrangement fitted to your motorcycle.
  • Whether additional adapters or mounting hardware are required.
  • Whether the footpeg needs to fold or return to a particular position.

Important: A footpeg advertised as suitable for Harley-Davidson motorcycles is not necessarily compatible with every model. Even products described as traditional male-mount pegs can have specific exclusions.

Choosing Footpegs for Comfort

Comfort is about more than the amount of rubber fitted to a footpeg.

Rubber-Covered Footpegs

Rubber inserts or sleeves can help isolate some vibration and provide a comfortable contact surface.

They are particularly popular with riders who spend long periods on motorways or covering substantial distances.

Machined Aluminium Footpegs

Billet aluminium footpegs are popular on customised Harley-Davidsons. Designs range from smooth, understated pegs to heavily textured styles inspired by motocross and performance motorcycles.

More aggressive surfaces can provide excellent boot grip, but sharp edges may also increase wear on footwear.

Extended and Adjustable Footpegs

Some aftermarket footpegs provide additional length or adjustable positioning.

An extended footpeg may be useful when the standard foot position feels restrictive. Adjustable designs can provide further options, although their range of adjustment and mounting compatibility vary considerably.

Remember that changing the position or length of a footpeg can also affect cornering clearance.

Are Floorboards Better for Long-Distance Riding?

For many touring riders, floorboards are a comfortable choice because they offer more room to reposition the feet.

Being able to move your boots slightly forwards or backwards can help reduce the feeling of remaining in one fixed position during a long journey.

Floorboards can also offer good support when riding in heavier boots.

However, fitting floorboards does not automatically provide more legroom. Your overall riding position still depends on the location of the foot controls, seat height and handlebar position.

On motorcycles originally equipped with footpegs, converting to floorboards may require dedicated mounting brackets, revised controls or a complete conversion kit.

It is important to confirm that all the required components are included before starting the conversion.

Mid Controls and Forward Controls

The position of your foot controls can have a greater effect on comfort than the choice between footpegs and floorboards.

Mid controls position your feet closer to the centre of the motorcycle. This can make it easier to support your weight through your legs and shift your body position when riding.

Forward controls place your feet further ahead, creating a more stretched riding position.

Some riders find forward controls more relaxing, while others prefer the control and support offered by mid-mounted arrangements.

Changing between the two can involve replacing more than just the footpegs. Depending on the model, the conversion may require brake components, gearshift linkage, brackets and associated hardware.

Don't Overlook Ground Clearance

Large floorboards, extended footpegs and certain aftermarket mounting arrangements can alter the motorcycle's available lean angle.

This deserves particular attention on lowered motorcycles.

If a footpeg or floorboard touches the road earlier than expected, it can affect the motorcycle's behaviour when cornering.

Some original footpegs and floorboards are designed to pivot upwards when they contact an obstruction. Replacement parts must not interfere with their intended movement.

After fitting new components, check their movement and clearance in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Rider and Passenger Footpegs Are Not Always Interchangeable

Although they may look similar, rider and passenger footpegs can use different mounting arrangements.

The passenger mounting position may also vary according to the motorcycle's model, year and fitted accessories.

Converting passenger footpegs to floorboards often requires model-specific supports or adapters.

Passenger floorboards can make a worthwhile difference to pillion comfort, but their position should allow adequate clearance from the exhaust, luggage and other components.

Do not assume that a matching rider and passenger design uses identical mounting hardware.

Replacing Worn Floorboard Rubbers

Not every floorboard problem requires an entirely new assembly.

On many models, the rubber insert can be replaced separately.

Over time, rubber pads can become hardened, cracked, loose or worn smooth. Replacing them can restore a more secure footing without changing the original floorboards.

Before ordering replacement inserts, check the shape, dimensions and retaining arrangement. Floorboard rubbers are not all interchangeable.

Fitting New Footpegs or Floorboards

Many straightforward footpeg replacements can be undertaken with ordinary workshop tools, but the exact procedure depends on the motorcycle and components involved.

Pay particular attention to retaining clips, pivot pins, springs and washers.

Some footpeg designs use a spring-loaded arrangement that must be correctly positioned during installation.

Floorboard replacements and conversions may require additional brackets, specified tightening torques or threadlocking compound.

Once fitted, check that:

  • Both sides are securely mounted.
  • Folding components move correctly.
  • The gear lever and rear brake can be operated freely.
  • Footpegs or floorboards do not obstruct other controls.
  • There is adequate clearance from the exhaust and other components.
  • Nothing interferes with the motorcycle's intended cornering clearance.

Always follow the instructions supplied with the parts and the relevant motorcycle service manual.

Choosing the Right Style

Footpegs and floorboards are also an opportunity to personalise your Harley-Davidson.

Black anodised aluminium is popular on modern performance-inspired builds, while chrome and polished finishes suit more traditional custom motorcycles.

Rubber-covered designs often complement classic Touring models, and machined aluminium floorboards can provide a more distinctive appearance.

Brands such as Arlen Ness, Kuryakyn, Performance Machine and Thrashin Supply offer a variety of designs, with matching control accessories available in some ranges.

Matching footpegs with handlebar grips, gearshift pegs and brake pedal pads can help produce a consistent appearance across the motorcycle.

Just remember that appearance should never take priority over mounting compatibility or safe operation.
